AJA Engineering as a subconsultant provided structural engineering, and cost estimate review and assessment for structural damage to this over Pass Bridge Structure No. 13.18 US Route 322 over NJ Turnpike mainline.  Structure No. 13.18 is US Rte 322 (Swedesboro Rd) over the. It is located in the Southern section of the Turnpike .The structure is four simple span steel structures, with composite concrete deck.

Structural Design
AJA Engineering provided the structural design for this Colonial style home consisting of two story with a very simple and efficient design. This Colonial architectural style is very identifiable with its very simplistic rectangular shape and the large columns, along with the symmetrical and equally sized windows, along with gabled roof from side to side. This two story Colonial Style house plan has over 5000 square feet of total living area; the second floor has four bedrooms, three baths. The first floor also provides comfort and style, with large living room, dining room, family room, and kitchen. The house features a dramatic two-story foyer that welcomes guests in grand style. The large island kitchen opens to a sunny breakfast area ideal for informal family dining. Upstairs, the master suite offers a large walk-in closet and a luxurious private bath.


Unity Sport and Cultural Club, 10 Dunbar Ave., Dorchester 02124

Architectural and Structural Design Modifications

AJA Engineering is providing architectural and structural design modifications for the Unity Sport & Cultural Club. The scope of services is to be provided in three phases, Phase I- Exiting Condition Survey, Phase II - Conceptual Design and Phase III will be Final Design and Specifications. The work includes developing and establishing design concept requirements, mission statement, and client specific needs. Conducting building code compliance, and  assessment review and developing building use program, along with providing two alternative interior design layouts for client review and consideration. The work also includes interior and exterior repairs and design, new floor plan layout, new roof and roof structure, and crack repairs.

 345 Dwight Street, Holyoke, MA- Structural Inspection and Repair Recommendations
AJA Engineering provided structural inspection and repair recommendations for the property located at 345 Dwight Street, in the City of Holyoke, Massachusetts. The Building is show on City map #033, occupying parcel #3, bounded by Dwight Street to the west, Race Street to south, and Main Street to the north. The Building dates back to the early 1900’s is approximately 82,000 sq ft, and is constructed of a combination of steel and wood framing, supported by brick bearing walls, granite foundation walls and footings .

 4 Sedgwick Lane, Lenox, MA- Structural Inspection and Repair Recommendations
AJA Engineering completed structural inspection and design repair recommendations for the property located at 4 Sedgwick Lane, in the Town of Lenox, Massachusetts.  The scope of work included foundation design modifications, crack repairs and settlement monitoring.

US Petroleum Maintenance Garage Addition
664 Washington Street- Quincy, MA- Structural Design 
AJA Engineering provided complete structural design for 14'x46' maintenance bay addition. The design included, foundations, bearing walls, supporting the structural framing. 10'x10' roll up doors were provided, along with design modification connecting existing structure to new addition.

Telecommunication Tower Design and Analysis

AJA Engineering, as a subconslutant is providing structural design services for major telecommunication carriers. Our services include structural analysis, design and repairs/retrofit modifications for many tower types.   

Overhead Protection Coverage System, Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Central Command, Iraq
Mr. Al-Zaim served as the Project Manager for the design and construction of overhead coverage systems for selected high-density (53 Army Bases) gathering facilities at various locations in Iraq that support the US Military troops. In all cases, existing facilities selected to receive this overhead cover are in use by US Military personnel. These overhead cover protective measures are based on the results of current research on 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm rockets conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). 

 
 
Afghan National Army (ANA) Regional Brigades, Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Central Command, Afghanistan
Mr. Al-Zaim served as the Design Manager for the design and construction of two ANA Regional Brigades facilities in Afghanistan. Each Brigade facility will house 6000 personnel. The work consisted of mine clearing, topographic survey, a site master plan, site demolition, and grading, design and construction of new buildings, construction of prime power plant and electrical distribution system, construction of a waste water treatment facility (aerated stabilization pond), and sanitary sewer collection system, solid waste management collection points and containerization.

Emergency Response Station /Electrical Substation, Boston, MA
Mr. Al-Zaim, as the Project Manager, provided the overall design direction and coordination on this $6 million Emergency Response Station #4/Electrical Substation (ES4). The Building is a single facility which is located on the site bounded by Albany Street to the west, Frontage Road to the east and the Boston Redevelopment Authority to the south. The two-story L-shaped building is a combination of steel framing with concrete slab on a metal deck. The primary activities for the ES4 is to provide emergency response to incidents on 1-90 and 1-93, short-term storage for disabled cars, repair of emergency response vehicles, and support for the electrical needs of the adjacent highway system.

 

 Administration building and toll plaza- MTA route 146 interchange 10A, Millbury, MA
Mr. Al-Zaim's responsibilities as the Technical Leader for the Administration Building and toll plaza included planning, monitoring, and coordinating all design and construction issues. The Administration building is a 6,720 sf one-story steel frame with a full basement. The building's system is a steel frame with pre-cast concrete planks for the first floor; metal deck and single-ply roofing for the roof. The basement is a 2'-6" concrete slab and retaining walls. The building exterior is a masonry/glass wall. The Toll Plaza is a one-story steel frame. The building's system is an arch steel frame; metal deck and single ply roofing. The Pedestrian Tunnel is a cast in place concrete box (8' X 8' X 170') connecting the building to the toll plaza.

 

 

 

 Marshfield industrial park, Marshfield, MA
Mr. Al-Zaim assisted in the design and preparation of construction documents for an 85,000 square foot office/warehouse condominium complex. Two typical units were designed: 10,000 and 5,000 square feet buildings with mezzanine for office space. The building's system is a steel frame with steel joists, metal deck, and concrete masonry infill walls.

 

 

 Rehabilitation Design
Rehabilitative design experience includes various facilities that required new roofs, masonry repairs, additions, concrete repairs, architectural and structural renovations.

Urban Highway Design

The Massachusetts Highway Department constructed the I-95/I-93 Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel (CA/T), the largest interstate highway project in the nation. The project includes approximately 7.5 miles of interstate highway in the City of Boston, half of which are tunnels. This multi billion 11-year CA/T project doubled existing traffic capacity along (I-95/I-93) and (I-90), and added 8-10 lanes of widened tunnels replacing the already existing above ground Central Artery.

Mr. Al-Zaim's responsibilities as the Deputy Project Manager included all of the day to day managing of team members and staff, planning, monitoring and coordinating all design and construction issues. He was also in charge of initiating, reviewing, negotiating and tracking all construction/design change orders, and all Client contacts for the Massachusetts Avenue Interchange I-93 Boston.

The contract included the design of a 16-lane roadway, signalized intersections, retained fill embankments, as well as complex bridges and viaducts (pre-stressed concrete beams and steel trapezoidal box girders), while maintaining traffic on one of the busiest roadways throughout the construction duration. Additionally the design was complicated by the relocation of major utilities and the complexity of the construction phasing.

Bridge Deck Replacement
Mr. Al-Zaim served as the Project Manager for this statewide bridge rehabilitation program. The scope of work consisted of preparing construction documents including plans, special provisions, quantity and cost estimate and providing construction phase services for deck replacement under the Statewide Bridge Deck Rehabilitation contract.




Bridge Inspection and Capacity Rating
For the past 18 years, Mr. Al-Zaim has inspected and performed structural analysis of over fifty bridges for MHD, MBTA, MDC, MTA, and the City of Boston. As the Project Manager, Mr. Al-Zaim's responsibilities included performing in-depth investigation/inspection, detailed inspection reports, live load capacity rating, assessing, and quantifying losses, providing recommendations for immediate and long-term and any posting. These assignments included interstate bridges, local roads, simple, continuous, steel and concrete structures. The scope of inspection and rating was completed in accordance with AASHTO, AREA, and the MHD Bridge Inspection hand book.
